Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley endured many hardships during her life. Some of these included her mother dieing during childbirth, her loathing stepmother, and later in life, the death of her beloved husband. Although she maintained a strong relationship with her father, it did not cover-up the absence of a strong maternal figure. Mary Shelley s novel Frankenstein, was influenced by the pain she encountered in her life. Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin was born on August 30, 1797 to the couple of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin. Wollstonecraft was a well-known feminist and Godwin was a popular political philosopher as well as a novelist. The two were quite the couple; both were intellectuals and had had a knack for writing. The topic of creating artificial life was very intriguing to most people in that time period. It was extremely unusual for a woman to be writing on such a topic of controversy, so why is it that Mary had chosen it? (Seymour) Many ideas are brought up about the explanations to why Mary Shelley would choose such a topic to write on. It was true that artificial life was one of the more popular subjects of the time period, but was that really why Mary wrote the story? It is quite possible that she chose to write Frankenstein to exorcize her own demons. She could have wanted to get all her thoughts out about the subject matter while putting some of her own personal touches in. Something she obviously used in the novel was an old rime by Coleridge that her father used to scare her with when she went to sleep at night. It was called the Rime of the Ancient Mariner; night after night, Mary s father would recite this. It was about a lonely man on the sea being haunted by the loneliness and icy waters of the ocean. This, of course, is used throughout the book when Robert Walton is on his lonely quest to reach the North Pole. Or perhaps another reason Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein was to express how she felt about her mother. Mary might have felt like the monster Dr. Frankenstein creates because she killed her own mother, or creator. It can not be denied
